The Perfect Birmingham Night Out

Share this article:

When thinking about the perfect Birmingham night out, there is a lot to consider. Culture, art, food, and of course fun times. Can you do it all in one night? Of course not! Birmingham is England’s second-biggest city and is full of unique and secret spots to explore. So the team at The Floodgate have done some research into the prime things you can do to get the best out of things you can do in Birmingham this weekend, and of course entertaining activities, in order to have an all-round banging night out!

To begin with, there are stunning art galleries and other such venues - if you are that way inclined. Birmingham has invested heavily in its arts and culture for decades and it has certainly paid off. The regions’ artistic strengths are unrivaled, and if you are spending a weekend and want to soak in some fine arts culture you can check out the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Symphony Hall, The Drum or Birmingham Botanical Gardens, but to name a few of the impressive locations and venues. If you fancy some culturally diverse music options the city is the center of the Asian music industry, the UK centre for Garage Music, and the base for the UK's first South Asian Music Performance and Dance company, SAMPAD. Depending on what time of year you’re planning your weekend of fun, there are festivals of jazz, comedy, poetry, film, and literature plus ArtsFest, an annual arts showcase with the UK's largest concentration of free events.

We also must mention The Bull Ring, a major shopping centre in central Birmingham which is the United Kingdom's largest city center-based shopping centre. There is also Birmingham's historic Jewellery Quarter which is now the largest jewelry making centre in Europe. If shopping’s your thang then that’s more than covered here!

So where are the cool spots? And what are the cool things to do in Birmingham? We hear you ask! There are many, that’s for sure. We recommend a trip to the Custard Factory. By the name, you have probably guessed what they used to make there. Located on Gibb street this factory used to make Bird’s Custard, now it houses the city’s cultural quarter. Set in 15 acres of beautifully restored Victorian Factories, it is the heart of Birmingham’s buzzing creative community. The Custard Factory is a creative hub home to many independent shops, quirky cafes, bars, and restaurants as well as some superb graffiti art.

Street art is a massive highlight to the city, and we recommend a walk around Digbeth to check out the graffiti, and taking in the awe-inspiring sights. Digbeth is the self-proclaimed creative quarter of Birmingham, where street artists from around the world have made a mark on its once-bare brick walls, so there is a lot of fantastic and impressive street art to gaupe at! The scene launched in 2014 for the City of Colours event, and this is a must-see for anyone visiting Birmingham. Now, the sheer volume of public art attracts artists and visitors to the area. It is a vibrant and exciting place to be. Digbeth has recently been named top spot in Sunday Times' list of coolest spots in the UK and is true to its title with ruin bars, award-winning street food pop-ups, compelling street art, creative shops, and unique music and entertainment spots.
